Easy Fruit Kebabs

Easy Fruit Kebabs

Elevate fresh fruits to the level of dessert! On wooden skewers, just simply thread the fruit pieces and you’ve got yourself a party on a stick! They’re very refreshing, healthy and fun to make. On top of that, along with encouraging your kids’ creativity, this recipe is definitely a fun way to increase their fruit consumption. So while enjoying this dessert, we are also helping to provide optimal health. How amazingly simple is that?

Today, let me share with you this Easy Fruit Kebabs recipe, the perfect choice for picnics, summer gatherings and any event with friends. To create this, you have the freedom to use just about any prepped fruit chunks and place them on wooden skewers to make it look inviting. However, on that note, it’s more preferable to opt for fruits that don’t oxidize or turn brown easily like bananas and apples do.

Since fruits can be digested quickly, I’ve added a recommendable dip high in fat and protein to keep your guests and the kids satisfied for longer. Let’s start!

RatingDifficultyBeginner

Prep Time20 mins

For the Fruit Kebab
 12 cups Watermelon, cubed
 12 cups Pineapple, cubed
 12 cups Cantaloupe, cubed
 12 Strawberries
 3 Mangoes, peeled and cubed
 12 Blackberries
3 Kiwis peeled, halved and sliced
For the Dip
 4 oz Strawberry yogurt
 4 oz Whipped cream

1

Prep the fruit by cutting into slices, wedges or chunks.

2

Thread and alternate prepped fruits onto skewers

3

Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

4

In a separate small bowl, combine fruit dip ingredients and stir well.

5

Serve the kebabs by placing them on a serving platter with the dip on the side.

TIPS:

  • I suggest selecting a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. Excellent choices include:

Melon (all varieties)

Seedless Grapes (red, green & black)

Berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries)

Kiwi slices

Pineapple chunks

Dragon fruit

Star fruit

Cantaloupe, honeydew or watermelon balls

Mango chunks

Note: Bananas are ideal but they brown easily. So if you wish to use them, just chill them with the peel intact. Peel, cut into chunks, thread them on skewers and serve.

  • Some fruits such as bananas, apples and pears oxidize easily and will look unappetizing on your skewers. So it’s best to avoid them.
  • The easiest way to keep your fruits from browning is to place them in a bowl with Sprite (or any lemon/lime soda) so that they all get wet just before skewering them. It is a lot better than adding lemon juice because the flavor doesn't seem to sink into the fruit. This trick is also great for fondues.
  • Skewers have a variety of sizes. To keep your children safe from kebab sticks with sharp ends, you may use lollipop sticks or customized ones especially made for children.
  • It is safe to store fruit kebabs in an airtight container or as long as they are well covered in the fridge, not the freezer. However, you can only store them preferably up to 6 hours to avoid the fruits from getting mushy. It’s still best making and then serving them fresh.
